The first urban core in Canela was founded in 1903, when colonel João Ferreira Corrêa da Silva settled at the location The town was populated basically by families of German and Italian immigrants, and its inhabitants, the Canelenses, are the result of their miscegenation with the gauchos.

Canela and Gramado are part of the so-called “Hydrangea Flower Region”, that also covers the towns of Nova Petrópolis and São Francisco de Paula. The regions was named this way because wherever you go in summer there are beautiful and abundant hydrangea in the gardens, squares, parks and even lining the roads, which makes cycling a delicious leisure option.
