Serra Gaúcha

The Serra Gaúcha, is located in the norheastern region of Rio Grande do Sul, and comprises three cultural regions: Gaúcha, Italian and German.

The Varanda das Bromélias Boutique Hotel is located in the town of Gramado, which is part of the German Region, as are the towns of Canela, Nova Petrópolis, among others.

It is also known as the Hydrangea Flower Region and is a main destination for Brazilian and foreign tourists in Rio Grande do Sul due to its countless natural and cultural attractions, and its excellent services for tourist support.

It was colonized by Germans, especially during the 1850s, most of whom were immigrants from Rheinland (Hunsrück), and who preserve to this day in the small villages the Hunsrück dialect. The inhabitants of the Hydrangea Flower Region, German Region, preserve and maintain some strong traditions such as the exaimel architecture, and its culinary, the colonial coffees, the countless festivals, their inheritance and form of celebration.

Other main highlights in this region are the manufacture of clothing, furniture, chocolate and handicrafts, and the incresingly sought after ecotourism.

The Italian Region, also known as Little Italy, started being colonized after 1875 in the towns of Carlos Barbosa, Garibaldi, Bento Gonçalves, Caxias do Sul, among others.

As with the German Region, in the Italian Region you can still hear the dialect left by its settlers, Talian, original from Northern Italy.
The main influence by the Italian immigrants in this area of the Serra Gaúcha is wine production. Here, the production of grapes for juices and wines is so important that the region has been baptized with the name Vine Valley.

The Vine Valley wines are unique in Brazil and feature the Stamp of Origination Indication assured by APROVALE, and are nationally and internationally renowned for their high quality.

The Gaúcho Region did not undergo European influence as with the other parts of the Serra Gaúcha.

It comprises the towns ofSão Francisco de Paula, São José dos Ausentes, among others, and the culture is similar to that from the Pampas region in Rio Grande do Sul.

The tradition is to sip chimarrão and the region is a major leather production hub. It is also where the Itaimbezinho canyon is located between the towns of Cambará do Sul and Praia Grande, considered to be the most impressive and famous in Aparados da Serra. The major highlights for tourists when visiting this region is sports fishing, trekking, photographic tours and horseback riding.

Do not forget to enquire at the Varanda das Bromélias Boutique Hotel about information for you to visit everything the Serra Gaúcha has to offer.
